ASS
VII The seventh Joint Area Scientific
Symposium
(JASS VII) was
organized by

the Karnataka Planters' Association and
UPASI Tea Scientific Department at Chikmagalur
District on the March 20th and 21st 1998.
The Symposium was inaugurated by Mr. S.S.Ahuja,
Chairman, Tea Board. About 200 delegates
comprising research and extension scientists
from the UPASI Scientific Department and
tea planters from all the tea growing areas
of south India participated in the conference.
The symposium included field visits, Paper
presentations and demonstration of harvesting
machinery and spraying equipments. Proceedings
of JASS VII have been published in Bulletin
No. 51 of UPASI Tea Scientific Department.
JASS VI
The Nilgiri-Wynaad
Planters' Association
(NWPA) and
UPASI
Scientific Department hosted the sixth Joint
Area Scientific Symposium at Gudalur on
December 3rd and 4th 1993. Nursery practices
and clonal preference, integrated drought
management, replanting and new planting,
shear harvesting, rejuvenation and consolidation
of old tea, infilling in mature tea, integrated
fertilizer schedule and soil management,
pest and disease management, tea manufacture
and marketing were some of the important
subjects discussed at the symposium. Proceedings
of JASS VII are available in Bulletin No.
46 of UPASI Tea Scientific Department.
JASS
V The fifth Joint Area Scientific
Symposium
(JASS V) was
organized by the Nilgiri Planters' Association
(NPA) and
UPASI
Scientific Department at Coonoor on August
22nd and 24th 1991. The Symposium was inaugurated
by Mr. M.A. Alagappan, Chairman UPASI Tea
Committee . Replanting of tea, soil and
water conservation, black root disease,
tea pest management, motorized harvesting
machines, clonal tea manufacture, application
of electronics in CTC manufacture and quality
aspects of tea were some of the important
subjects discussed at the symposium. Bulletin
No. 44 of UPASI Tea Scientific Department
contains the proceedings of JASS V.
JASS
IV The fourth Joint Area Scientific
Symposium
(JASS IV) was
organized by the
Kannan Devan Planters' Association
and
UPASI Scientific Department
at Munnar, Idukki District on December 1st
to 3rd, 1988. The Symposium was inaugurated
by Mr.M.A. Alagappan, Chairman,Tea Product
Sub Committeeof UPASI.About 140 delegates
participated in the conference.Topics discussed
were energy plantations, production agronomy,
new clonal clearing, manuring, harvesting
and tea productivity and control of blister
blight. Proceedings of JASS IV have been
published in Bulletin No. 42 of UPASI Tea
Scientific Department.
JASS
III The third Joint Area Scientific
Symposium
(JASS
III) was
held at Valparai on the December 13th to
15th, 1984. The Symposium was inaugurated
by Mr. N.C. Kankani, Chairman, Tea Product
Sub Committee, UPASI. About 100 delegates
participated in the conference. Partial
rejuvenation pruning, disease and pest control,
shot hole borer management, manuring of
tea and nutrition factors in tea production
were some of the important subjects discussed
at the symposium. Proceedings of JASS III
are available in Bulletin No. 39 of UPASI
Tea Scientific Department.
JASS
II The second Joint Area Scientific
Symposium
(JASS II) was
jointly organized by the Central Travancore
Planters' Association and
UPASI
Tea Scientific Department at Vandiperiyar,
Idukki District on the April 26th and 28th
1979. The Symposium was inaugurated by Mr.
A.A. Khan, Chairman, CTPA. More than 80
delegates participated in the conference.
Topics such as shade for tea, performance
of clonal selections, pests and diseases,
zinc deficiency and response to fertilizers,
soil irrigation, nursery practices and chemical
weed control were covered during the symposium.
Bulletin No. 36 UPASI Tea Scientific Department
contains the proceedings of JASS II.
JASS I
The first Joint Area Scientific Symposium
(JASS I) was organized by the
UPASI
Tea Scientific Department at Glenview,
Coonoor on the September 12th 1977. The
Symposium was inaugurated by Mr. K.B. Somana,
President, UPASI. About 30 delegates participated
in the meeting. Development and maintenance
of healthy bush frames, cardinal role of
nutrient inputs, optimizing plucking system,
plant protection technology and irrigation
were some of the important subjects discussed
at the symposium.
